the virtual model: is it for me?

Telehealth has emerged as a valuable tool for mental health professionals, which offers a convenient and effective way to connect with clients remotely. By using secure video conferencing platforms, therapists can conduct sessions from any location, providing flexibility for both themselves and their clients. This approach has been transferable to clinical supervision as well. With the telehealth model, we’re able to reach clients with mobility issues and those in rural areas, and the same goes for clinicians looking for supervision. The virtual format eases the burden on the working clinician by offering convenience. If you’ve ever driven through Atlanta during rush hour while trying to get literally anywhere, you know exactly what I mean. But is it for you? Well, that question really boils down to what helps you learn and grow. For some, they need to share that space with others. That connection within the physical space keeps them grounded to the work. For others, they’re able to feel connected and supported within the virtual space. The interactions still feel meaningful and they’re able to engage without sharing traditional brick and mortar.

Are there downsides to tele-supervision? Absolutely. Much of its success depends on a Clinical Supervisor who is knowledgable and skilled in this format. Are they using a HIPAA compliant program to protect you and your clients? Are they prepared to navigate boundary and ethical issues that could arise in a virtual space (multitasking, etc.)? These are some the question you definitely want to ask your Supervisor before signing a contract.

Both options have pros and cons. No matter which you chose, just make sure it’s promoting the kind of growth you need to move effectively towards unrestricted licensure.
